Lucci
Lucci owes his passion for voting to “a tough Southern gal born in 1933” — his grandmother. She would take him to the polls at an early age, explaining every vote and teaching him that his vote was a responsibility to his community. “To understand what she had to do to make it a better life, she expressed the importance of voting to us. Not just for top officials, but for everybody. School board — everything. We had to vote.”
Christopher
Christopher has never missed an opportunity to cast a vote, and he's passionate about getting young people excited about the electoral process. His advice? Don't assume young people only care about celebrities or pop culture. “Voters have the power to shape outcomes for this nation, but only if they provide input and show up on Election Day to vote. People need to vote like it matters. Because then it will.”
Tushana
Tushana remembers walking through her elementary school auditorium and seeing people entering and exiting voting booths, “I Voted” stickers stuck to their shirts. Not one to be shy, her curiosity at a young age sparked a lifelong passion for voting. “Voting was never always a right for Black people. So for me, I’m so passionate about voting because generations all along couldn't, and here we are now,” she said. “I am able to vote. My voice can be heard...and who doesn’t want to be heard?”
Laurie
Like many people, Laurie was nervous the first time she cast her vote. But the poll worker who checked her registration left her with a message she remembers 20 years later: No matter who she voted for, she voted for what she thought was right. “You can make a difference. While it’s not overnight, you have to have patience and you can see great things being accomplished.”
Will
The first time Will cast a vote, he had just been released from prison. An overwhelming sense of pride came over him as he approached the ballot box because he knew firsthand what it meant to regain a right that had once been lost. “Voting levels us. I was born in a society where people told me that my voice didn’t matter. I was born poor with a single mom living in the projects in Chicago. We were raised to believe that we didn’t have a vote, that we didn’t have a voice," he said. "And that’s a lie."
